Why Water Efficiency?

The most common perception of Scotland is that it has more than enough water, probably due to its reputation for heavy rainfall, even in summer, and its abundant lochs and rivers.

Water is scarce in parts of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well as in England – large scale drought is already occurring in the UK, with the lowest rainfall, groundwater and reservoir levels for decades. In the past few years, some parts of Scotland have experienced long periods of drought resulting in Government intervention to ensure that sufficient water remained available for residents.

As the customer representative body for water customers in Scotland, Waterwatch Scotland welcomed that in 2007, its statutory role was changed to include a duty of promoting water efficiency in Scotland creating awareness among the public and within industry of the need to use less water.

Waterwatch Scotland is currently working in partnership with both Scottish Water and Waterwise to move towards a more sustainable future for Scotland through promoting the need for greater water efficiency in Scotland. The Saving Water in Scotland Network forum seeks to identify and implement water efficiency strategies, and is supported by members from the water industry, commerce and Government. We hope that together, we can change the behaviour of water customers to create sustainable water resources in Scotland for the future.
